Inner life of the cell: narrated and annotated version
Posted on November 14th, 2010 No commentsWelcome back to ClickBiologyThis is the longer 8 minute version with narration. Again not wide screen as the image stays sharper in this version. Slow to load so give time for buffering. If these links are lost then the main site Biovisions has download versions (but small screen only as far as I can work out).

Inspirational video: Inner life of the cell
Posted on November 14th, 2010 No commentsI can´t believe I haven´t put a link to this video before. It is from Harvard university and it is truly amazing. The version below is for the three minute version. Although it isn´t wide screen this version seems to be the sharpest and shows up best on white boards. I like to use this as an introduction to cell biology for my students and then tell them that at the end they will understand much of what they see. Then at the end I show them the 8 minute annotated and narrated version. It is my favourite video and there is a TED talk by its creator as well, for anyone wanted to know more of how and why it was made. Give it time to buffer before showing, can take awhile. Enjoy:

AS biology revision: Morgan’s mindmap
Posted on May 19th, 2010 No commentsOne of my AS students, Morgan, used a free lesson to revise his Biology AS work and wrote this mindmap. I left it on the board for a while and it made quite an impact on my Year 7 and 10 classes. It certainly highlighted to the younger students the intricacies of the subject and sparked quite a few discussions on what cells are really like (and not the fried egg image we teach at KS3 and 4!) Click on the image to take a closer look. We argued over whether there should be a linking arrow from the fluid mosaic section to globular proteins. We actually spent the day with me secretely adding the arrow and Morgan secretely rubbing it off again. Yes I know…we both need to get a life!

A Level Powerpoint presentation: Membrane structure and function
Posted on May 8th, 2010 2 comments
This is a teaching Powerpoint presentation for AS level Biology (see link to file at bottom of post or click on image). The presentation contains animations and questions. I have been playing around with trigger animations at the moment so the questions have the answers hidden behind clickable boxes and can then be covered up again. To move to the next slide you click on the main background or the forward arrows bottom left hand of corner. If the reveal boxes annoy you then you can simply add an extra slide and put the answers on these.Other animations occur when you click on background.
There are a couple of prompt/instruction slides to book or practical activities and of course you can add more. I will do a video version of this soon.
