Inspirational video: Inner life of the cell
Posted on November 14th, 2010 No commentsWelcome back to ClickBiologyI can´t believe I haven´t put a link to this video before. It is from Harvard university and it is truly amazing. The version below is for the three minute version. Although it isn´t wide screen this version seems to be the sharpest and shows up best on white boards. I like to use this as an introduction to cell biology for my students and then tell them that at the end they will understand much of what they see. Then at the end I show them the 8 minute annotated and narrated version. It is my favourite video and there is a TED talk by its creator as well, for anyone wanted to know more of how and why it was made. Give it time to buffer before showing, can take awhile. Enjoy:

Video: Nitrogen cycle
Posted on May 19th, 2010 10 commentsHere is a short 3 minute video revising the nitrogen cycle. I am learning to use Camtasia at the moment so there are some glitches (if you make it full screen you lose resolution, plus I haven’t edited out the odd error here and there). The video concentrate sonly on the nitrogen cycle and is useful for IGCSE, GCSE and AS level revision.

A Level video: Nephron structure and function
Posted on May 8th, 2010 No commentsThis is an excellent video for A level revising the nephron. Recommend that students review structure of the kidney first so they understand how the nephron is situated in the cortex and medulla of the kidney:

Videos illustrating Parkinson’s disease
Posted on May 8th, 2010 No commentsHere are a collection of videos that explain or illustrate Parkinsons disease:
A 1 minute animation explaining the cause of Parkinson’s disease:

Similar video to the above (and refers more specifically to the substantia nigra as the site rather than the basal ganglia, which it is part of). This video explains why the reduction in dopamine causes the tremors. (1.21 minutes)

Understanding Parkinson’s Disease: A very good introductory video on Parkinsons (recommended, 3.15 minutes):
A short overview of Michael J Fox discussing his symptoms (2.13 minutes)

A video highlighting the section of the Michael J Fox interview by Oprah regarding the dangers of using embryonic adult stem cells and the advancement in using adult cells; from Science Matters (3.13 minutes):

This is a really old clip (and I mean really really old!) of a medical video highlighting the symptoms of Parkinsons (1.45 minutes):

AS Level Biology: cystic fibrosis videos
Posted on April 13th, 2010 No commentsI had a good look at the range of available videos and these very short ones seem to be the most informative:
Video 1: Very short introductory video explaining what CF is
Link to video on About.com (1.25 minutes)
Living with CF videos:
1: This video 8.22 minutes. I found this a very useful video to show the students so the appreciate the seriousness of the disease. It is quite emotional.2. This video lasts about 9 minutes and outlines the treatments and medications required in one day for a 10 year old girl. Again it is useful to show as it highlights to the students all the medications, and the reasons for them.
This video lasts for 3 minutes 30 seconds and is an excellent overview of how CF is inherited, symptoms and treatment:
