A Level worksheets: Section 8.5
Posted on May 8th, 2010 No commentsWelcome back to ClickBiology
These worksheets covers section 8.5 Making sense of what we see fromt he A2 SNAB textbook. I developed these as I had a A2 class of lads who did not like making their own notes. These worksheets focused them and ensured they worked through the section methodically. All the answers come in order so as they read through the section they can fill the sheets in as they go. Very useful for cover lessons and homework also (plus, if I am honest, to set the students to work on in class when you are overloaded with admin and need them to just work on their own but also be productive).Worksheets: Section 8.5 Making sense of what we see

A Level worksheets: Visual development
Posted on May 8th, 2010 No comments
Worksheets to coincide with section 8.4 of Topic 8 A2 level Edexcel Biology from the context based Textbook. This allows the students to work through the chapter and create notes in the style of answers to exam questions. This method can be useful as it prevents students from effectively copying out the textbook in lieu of notes and so think about what they are writing. Also they are great as cover lesson or homework.Worksheets for section 8.4 Visual development

Videos illustrating Parkinson’s disease
Posted on May 8th, 2010 No commentsHere are a collection of videos that explain or illustrate Parkinsons disease:
A 1 minute animation explaining the cause of Parkinson’s disease:
http://video.about.com/seniorhealth/Parkinson-s-Disease.htm
Similar video to the above (and refers more specifically to the substantia nigra as the site rather than the basal ganglia, which it is part of). This video explains why the reduction in dopamine causes the tremors. (1.21 minutes)

Understanding Parkinson’s Disease: A very good introductory video on Parkinsons (recommended, 3.15 minutes):
A short overview of Michael J Fox discussing his symptoms (2.13 minutes)

A video highlighting the section of the Michael J Fox interview by Oprah regarding the dangers of using embryonic adult stem cells and the advancement in using adult cells; from Science Matters (3.13 minutes):

This is a really old clip (and I mean really really old!) of a medical video highlighting the symptoms of Parkinsons (1.45 minutes):

AS Level Biology: cystic fibrosis videos
Posted on April 13th, 2010 No commentsI had a good look at the range of available videos and these very short ones seem to be the most informative:
Video 1: Very short introductory video explaining what CF is
Link to video on About.com (1.25 minutes)
Living with CF videos:
1: This video 8.22 minutes. I found this a very useful video to show the students so the appreciate the seriousness of the disease. It is quite emotional.2. This video lasts about 9 minutes and outlines the treatments and medications required in one day for a 10 year old girl. Again it is useful to show as it highlights to the students all the medications, and the reasons for them.
This video lasts for 3 minutes 30 seconds and is an excellent overview of how CF is inherited, symptoms and treatment:

A2 Biology Level coursework help sheet and presentation
Posted on April 4th, 2010 2 comments
When I set the coursework for my students I always review the markscheme carefully. I used to print it off and hand it to them but I suspect they never really read them through. Hence I have done a shorter version (2 pages) that simply recaps the main requirements and the higher range marking guidelines. In addition there is a brief PowerPoint presentation reviewing the markscheme. All of these are deliberately short as I do want to keep the students focussed and not overload them with too much information.worksheets:
